Sometimes you find yourself standing somewhere looking at a scene that feels like it’s come right out of a painting. This photograph captures one of those times for me.

New Zealand lakehouse

I took the picture in New Zealand back in January while exploring the Fiordlands. As I came around a bend in the road the scene I saw this scene and it reminded me somewhat of paintings I saw in a New Orleans art gallery.

José Basso painted the a solitary house in a field time and time again and the solitary house in by this lake reminded me of his work. The golden grass, contrasted with the green trees and mountains behind looked like something John Constable might have painted, had he ever had the chance to visit New Zealand.

It seemed to me that while it made for a good photograph, it would surely be better as a painting. The wonders of photoshop allowed me to create a ‘painted’ version of the picture, but that’s cheating. I wonder though, if I had lived in a time before cameras, would I have taken up painting in the same way I took up photography? 366paintings.com? Hmm..

Gallery

The picture I actually posted on this day was one from deep within the Fiordland National Park. It was a tough choice, but in the end I chose that one because much of the day was spent hiking around looking at rolling green mountains and that made it a more fitting picture of the day in my opinion.
