I almost don’t want to post this after the debacle in the comments on the last cartoon I posted, but I’m looking at this thinking to myself that this cartoon cannot possibly provoke any over-analyzing, surely? However, if you find this offensive then may I suggest that you book a vacation, somewhere warm and relaxing, a place where you can spend a little ‘you time‘ to chill the f**k out!

i’m ashamed how long it took me to see the punchline on this one….i kept thinking… cheeses? why would they want to talk about cheese? then i began to wonder if possibly churches have a reputation for serving good cheese… because of potlucks or something.. or some kind of strange communion. or maybe the mice are confronting him on his sinful lifestyle… of cheese?
and then finally it clicked… and it was funny. its unfortunate how long it takes me to get things. but there ya go… maybe i need a vacation.

I was going to post this under the title of “Shine Cheeses Shine”, but I wasn’t sure if anyone would get that. My hope is that nobody sings that bloody awful song anymore.

They really are a pest aren’t they. Mice are annoying too. :)

If I wanted to, I could over analyze the sh*t out of this one, but the phonemic play that the joke relies upon is enough.

Whatever.
Mmmmm… cheese.

On a totally unrelated note… every time I see a commercial for Run Fatboy Run, I think of you.
Not that you’re pudgy or anything – probably just because the main actor’s name is Simon and he’s English.

:-) Well of all the things that remind you of me Matt, Run Fatboy Run!
In the UK my name is very common, I like that it’s not a common name outside the UK.

I went ahead and clicked on the link to Shine Jesus Shine and now I wish I hadn’t. But did you click on this one. I think I would rather be strapped in a chair with my nuts wired to the grid than be subjected to a full concert of this kind of crap! I challenge you to watch that clip and see how far you can get through it. I made it to about half way :)

I made it through the entire clip but only because I was reading some of the funny comments, like this one…
“martinses (3 days ago)
This version totally sucks. Praise music is not intended to imitate the cocaine, alcohol and sex-inspired disco era.”
Oh doesn’t martinses sound like a fun fun person! I left a comment on the video though :-)

There has to be some mileage in changing Jesus to Cheeses? Cheeses of Nazareth anyone?

Simon – There was a time not so long ago when I heard ‘Shine Jesus shine’ played a couple of times and I thought it might be having a resurgence. You know, like 80s styles becoming fashionable again in the naughties (I guess the mullet would be a good comparison).
Just to prove that not all religious people totally lack a sense of humour and think cartoons are sinful, I humbly submit:

yes. especially brie. lately, though, I’ve become addicted to string cheese.

Anyone remember the scene out of The Life of Brian, where a few people are hearing Jesus give his Sermon on the Mount, but they are way in the distance, so they have a hard time hearing him and the dialogue goes:
GREGORY:
What was that?
JESUS (in the distance):
…for their possession. How blest are those…
MR. CHEEKY:
I don’t know. I was too busy talking to Big Nose.
JESUS (in the distance):
…who hunger and thirst to see…
MAN #1:
I think it was ‘Blessed are the cheesemakers.’
JESUS (in the distance):
…right prevail.
MRS. GREGORY:
Ahh, what’s so special about the cheesemakers?
GREGORY:
Well, obviously, this is not meant to be taken literally. It refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.
I guess there is something naturally funny about Jesus and cheese. From the Life of Brian, I particularly like the part about “not meant to be taken literally.” Someday, I will write an essay titled “On Hermeneutics and Dairy Products: the literal and metaphorical consumption of cheese in the life of discipleship.”
